Man fatally shot by Denton police at pickleball court after threatening officers, cops say
A man who threatened to hit officers with a metal rod was killed Sunday afternoon at a pickleball court after Denton police fired multiple shots, police said.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man who died as 25-year-old Adrian Guevara.
The Denton police officers responded about 12 p.m. to the court in the 1100 block of Riney Road after a 911-caller reported about a man who appeared to be intoxicated, police said in a news release.
When officers arrived, they found the man, later identified as Guevara, on the north side of the pickleball courts, where he climbed on top of a fence holding a metal rod, police said.
According to police, Guevara told the officers “they were going to have to kill him” and threatened the officers with the metal rod.
Police said officers tried to talk with the man, but he climbed down from the fence and charged at them while holding the metal rod.
One officer used a Taser, but it did not stop Guevara, according to the release. A second officer then fired several shots, hitting Guevara multiple times, police said.
Guevara was taken to an area hospital, where he died, police said.
Police said no officers or other residents were injured during this incident.
The officer who fired the gun has been placed on administrative leave while the department’s internal affairs unit conducts an investigation, police said.
The Texas Rangers are also investigating the shooting, the release stated.
