Video: Whataburger manager beats alleged assailant with garbage can
The manager of a North Texas Whataburger was captured on video beating an assailant with a garbage can after the man allegedly assaulted employees in the restaurant, according to police.
Officers in Paris, Texas — which is about two hours northeast of Dallas — responded to the Whataburger in the 2400 block of North Main Street on Tuesday, Feb. 22, according to Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV.
They found that a customer, since identified as 41-year-old Anthony William Newhuis of Spring, was being verbally abusive to the staff. The manager asked Newhuis to leave, and he complied, but threatened to return and assault the manager once police were gone, according to a statement.
Newhuis is accused of later returning and assaulting the manager by punching him multiple times, police said.
The manager recovered, subdued Newhuis, and forced him out of the store, police said. Video from witness Billy Jones shows the manager beating Newhuis with a garbage can in an attempt to subdue him.
When police returned, they found Newhuis in the parking lot, bleeding from the head. He was charged with assault resulting in bodily injury and public intoxication. Officials later added a charge of criminal mischief less than $750 after Newhuis intentionally flooded a jail cell, according to WFAA.
