The frigid winter weather in Dallas-Fort Worth and across the country has worsened the nation’s already low blood supply, according to the American Red Cross.

“The national blood supply remains at critically low levels,” the Red Cross said in a news release, adding that it is experiencing a “severe blood shortage” because of the winter weather.

The winter storm, which affected states throughout the U.S., canceled about 450 blood drives. More than 10,000 blood and platelet donations were not collected from Friday to Monday, according to the Red Cross.

The nonprofit is urging donors to make an appointment to give blood or to go to a blood drive.

“Those who are not impacted by the storm are urged to donate immediately,” the Red Cross said.

All donors who donate between Jan. 26 and Feb. 28 will receive a $20 gift card to a merchant of their choice, the Red Cross said.
