Northeast suburbs are preparing for the expected weather issues this weekend as a winter storm and extreme cold watches are in effect for much of North Texas.

Temperatures will start dropping to the upper 30s Friday afternoon according to the most recent updates by the National Weather Service, with a 90 percent chance of rain.

The NWS said there is a chance for all types of precipitation including rain, freezing rain, that could mix with sleet.

The major concerns are keeping the streets safe for driving and emergency preparedness for any power outages in the area.

Keller

Mayor Armin Mizani said on social media that the city is prepared to use several trucks with plowing capabilities if there is snow or ice on main roads.

The city has started brining intersections, bridges and other areas that have steep inclines, or curvy portions that cause problems when it snows or ices.

Areas of particular focus will be major roads such as Keller Parkway, Rufe Snow, North Tarrant, Keller Smithfield, Break Creek and others.

Public works staff will be working on 12-hour shifts. Outdoor city restrooms and water fountains will be shut off and winterized.

Community Waste Disposal will notify the city if trash pickup needs to be suspended. “If Saturday morning’s planned leaf collection cannot be completed, the signup list will be used to prioritize collections once trucks can safely return to the road.”

The Keller Pointe and Keller Public Library will have delayed openings Saturday possibly at 11 a.m.

Mizani also said voting for the Senate District 9 special election will still take place at Town Hall unless it loses power or Tarrant County closes election facilities.

What’s been canceled in Keller so far:

  • The fishing for fun event scheduled for Saturday
  • Saturday morning programs at the library
  • Group exercise classes and sports at The Pointe for the weekend
  • The volleyball league will be rescheduled

Colleyville

(NEW) Colleyville announced on social media that all city events scheduled for this weekend have been cancelled or postponed. The library will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and hours of operation may be expanded if needed. The city said public safety staff will remain on duty to respond to emergencies, and Community Waste Disposal will notify customers if Monday operations need to be canceled.

The city said the public works team and first responders are prepared, and major intersections will be treated with brine solution.

The city is asking residents to prepare by remembering to protect their pets, pipes and plants by:

  • Bringing pets inside
  • Covering outdoor pipes
  • Filling cars up with gas
  • Having an emergency kit ready to go
  • Turning off automatic sprinkler systems
  • Knowing how to locate and shut off water for your home
  • Checking on neighbors to make sure they are prepared
  • Bringing plants indoors and cover any that cannot be moved

Grapevine

A spokesperson for the city told the Star-Telegram that public works crews will begin treating elevated areas on Friday and will continue to work through Monday.

The city provided information from Oncor about preparations and where to find winter weather information from the company on social media.

Southlake

The office of emergency management is monitoring conditions and coordinating with other city departments. Public work crews will begin brining roads Thursday.

Earlier in the week, Southlake Mayor Shawn McCaskill and the city’s Department of Public Safety released a video updating residents on the city’s winter weather preparedness plan.

“As the winter weather forecast becomes more concise, and we think it’s more of a possibility, we’ll start activating and getting our Emergency Operation Center team ready to go in the event that we have inclement weather,” said Jeremy Wilson, assistant chief of operations for the Southlake Fire Department.

Southlake officials will be providing updates to residents through the city’s website, social media, Nextdoor and customer service.
