Finding the right nursing home for a loved one can be stressful.

Between understanding costs, checking reviews, and making sure the facility provides good care, it’s a lot to take in.

A new U.S. News & World Report study might make that search a little easier.

The publication reviewed nearly 15,000 nursing homes across the country and recognized 16 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area as among the nation’s best.

The ratings are based on staffing, safety and how well residents recover or maintain their health.

The study looked at both short-term rehabilitation, which helps patients recover after surgery or illness; and long-term care, which supports people who need daily assistance.

Each nursing home received one of three ratings: High performing, average, below average.

Here’s what to know.

How did U.S. News rate nursing homes?

Researchers used data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other federal sources.

They looked at 17 quality measures that included nurse staffing levels, health outcomes and inspection reports.

Facilities were also rated on things like infection control and how often residents were hospitalized or sent to the emergency room.

To earn the “High Performing” label, a facility needed to show strong staffing numbers, fewer hospital readmissions, and better outcomes for patients than the national average.

What’s the difference between short-term and long term care?

Short-term rehab is for people who need skilled nursing and therapy for a short period, usually after surgery, injury, or a hospital stay.

Long-term care supports residents who live at the facility full-time and need help with daily activities like walking, bathing or managing chronic conditions.

On average, highly rated nursing homes had more staff and offered more physical therapy hours per resident than other facilities across the country.

How many North Texas nursing homes made the list?

In total, U.S. News reviewed 244 facilities across Dallas-Fort Worth, including in Arlington.

Out of those facilities, 16 earned a “High Performing” rating, the publication’s top mark for quality care.

Here’s a look at those 16 top-rated nursing homes and what each one offers.
