Radar, telecom outages wreak havoc on Dallas’ airports on Friday
Radar and telecommunications outages wreaked havoc on both major Dallas-Fort Worth airports on Friday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Hundreds of flights were canceled at both Dallas Love Field and Dallas-Fort Worth International airports due to the disruption, according to WFAA-TV.
Delays at Love Field were lifted at around 7:30 Friday evening, according to WFAA. Dallas-Fort Worth remains under a ground stop until 10 p.m., with 506 flights canceled for the day so far, according to FlightAware.
“The FAA reported an issue involving the telecommunications provider for the air traffic control facility that oversees the airspace in the Dallas-Fort Worth area,” American Airlines said in a statement. “As a result, the FAA has severely limited flights into both DFW Airport and Dallas Love Field, which is affecting our operation.”
Star-Telegram columnist Mac Engel was caught in the airport chaos as he attempted to depart for Kansas City.
Video Engel took inside the airport showed long lines stretching from American Airlines’ customer service desk.
Travelers with American Airlines who were impacted by the delays can rebook flights without change fees, according to the airline.
