Bedford officials are seeking answers to what led to the deaths of an undetermined number of fish at the Generations Park Boys Ranch Lake last weekend.

Molly Fox, a spokesperson for the city, said she awoke early Saturday morning and saw a direct message on Bedford’s Instagram page from a resident who saw several dead fish near the edge of the lake.

The lake is a popular place for residents to take walks.

Fox said city employees immediately went to the lake when they got the news about the fish. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Trinity River Authority and a private fishery are conducting tests of water samples from the lake, and Fox said the report should be finished later this week.

Fox said an undetermined number of fish were removed from the lake, including several species of catfish, large-mouthed bass and sunfish, she said.

“We don’t have an accurate specific count on the number of dead fish, but we believe it’s a total loss,” she said.

Bedford also posted a message about the loss of the fish on its web site.

“This is a difficult situation for everyone who loves and values Boys Ranch Lake. Our staff, who care deeply for the park and its wildlife, are devastated, and we know many in the community feel the same.”

Fox said other wildlife at the Boys Ranch Lake including ducks and turtles were not affected.

In 2018, there was another fish kill at the Boys Ranch Lake after a water main broke, sending debris and chlorinated water in to the lake and reducing oxygen levels.
