European-style bakery in this Fort Worth suburb is a perfect fit for new owners

When Bryan and Fara Motta relocated to the Fort Worth area from Boston four years ago, like all newcomers they wanted to fit in with their surroundings.

What better way to incorporate themselves in the community than to become owners of one of the most popular bakeries around? And that is what they did one year ago on June 17 when the young couple took ownership of BreadHaus at 700 W. Dallas Road in Grapevine, a popular European-style artisan bakery that has been drawing customers since opening in 1996.

“It’s been great,” Bryan said. “You never know exactly how things are going to go when taking over a business, but everything has been great. The previous owners were very helpful in the transition, the community has welcomed our family, and our employees have been amazing as well.”

Becoming part of the food industry was something new for both of them. Bryan previously worked for a couple of software startups before starting his own software company — which he sold before they purchased Breadhaus — and Fara still works in the dental industry as a sales manager.

But they were looking for something different, something they could grow into as a family. Also, being advocates of a healthy lifestyle, when they learned BreadHaus was for sale they couldn’t pass up the chance to combine both.

“We spent the past few years looking for a business to own but could never find the right one,” Bryan said. “We had a lot of nonnegotiables, but BreadHaus was the perfect fit for us.

“The concept is exactly how we try to live at home — high quality organic ingredients and minimal ingredients.”

Fara said an additional major attraction was the bakery being a part of a strong community with loyal followers.

“We loved that it was family owned and a staple in Grapevine,” she said.

To which Bryan added with a smile, “and the food is amazing.”

Focus on healthy ingredients

Fara and Bryan stressed that they are dedicated to continuing the mission of the former owners by focusing on healthy ingredients, such as organic grains, seeds and flours. Not only is it their own choice for eating, the steady influx of customers supports many others thinking so as well, Bryan said.

“I think our generation is really waking up to all the poison that is in our food supply and unnatural ingredients in our food,” Bryan said. “So people are seeking out healthier alternatives and we are happy to be able to offer that.”

Bryan said their most popular items are sourdough bread, pretzels and train rolls — which are soft rolls with raisins, no added fats or sugars. His personal favorite is their chocolate chip cookies.

“Everything is so good, but my favorites are the sourdough bread and Oma’s multigrain,” Fara said. “I love eating almond butter and strawberry jam sandwiches.”

Bryan’s grandmother is from Portugal, so they added some of her recipes (bread and sweets) to the menu during the Easter season and received great feedback.

“We may have to bring it back again sometime this year,” he said.

And now they plan to offer their products to folks outside of Grapevine. Inspired by customers who travel great distances to savor their goodies, Bryan said they are excited to announce they are looking to franchise.

“When we bought BreadHaus one of our goals was to expand and bring our health-conscious baked goods to more communities,” he said. “We have so many guests that drive an hour or more on the weekends to load up for the week, and franchising allows us to bring our food to more communities.”

But, he added, they will always be grateful for the welcome Grapevine has given them and the success they are enjoying there. He said it’s been a great first year and they are looking forward to many more as they prepare to relocate their home from Aubrey to Grapevine.

“We’re really excited to be part of this community and we’re so thankful for them,” he said.
