The service of a warrant in Kaufman County resulted in the recovery of over 100 animals, officials with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Texas said.

Fifty roosters, 43 hens, 34 adult dogs and 10 puppies were discovered at the Kaufman property over the course of an unrelated investigation, officials said.

Initial investigations show that the dogs and chickens were used in animal fighting, and that the chickens are connected to a cockfighting investigation that began earlier this year, officials said.

The dogs and roosters were found in pens and most of the animals had limited access to shelter or clean water, according to the statement.

Also on the property, authorities found medications, a scale, blood-spattered treadmills and other paraphernalia, officials with the SPCA said.

The owner relinquished custody at the scene, and the dogs will be re-homed as appropriate, according to the statement.
