U.S. attorney for North Texas to resign in January, office says
The U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas will resign a day before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, according to a news release from her office.
Leigha Simonton was nominated to the post by President Joe Biden in 2022, and had previously served the district as an assistant U.S. attorney for nearly 18 years, according to the statement.
“I cannot put into words what this experience has meant to me, and I leave with two decades of incredible memories,” Simonton said. “There is nothing more important than the work of our outstanding women and men in this office and in North Texas law enforcement, and I will be forever grateful to have been a part of it.”
Simonton’s tenure saw the office prosecute its highest number of cases in over a decade, according to the release.
Notable cases include that of a Dallas anesthesiologist convicted of tampering with IV bags and a woman convicted of helping her fiance murder his ex-girlfriend, according to the statement.
After her resignation, Simonton intends to return to private practice, she said.
An acting U.S. attorney will be announced at a later date, the office said.
