A North Texas sheriff’s deputy was killed in an accident the night of Oct. 2 while he was responding to a vehicle crash in Wise County, officials said.

Deputy Lex Allen Love was en route to the scene of the accident on County Road 4421 when his cruiser struck a concrete barrier in a construction zone. Love was unresponsive when other deputies who were nearby reached him, the Wise County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post.

Love was transported to Medical City Decatur hospital, but died from his injuries later Wednesday night.

Love’s death leaves “a huge hole” in Wise County law enforcement, officials said in the post.

The 26-year-old started his work at the Sheriff’s Office as a jailer. He attended police academy in Decatur and worked as a patrol officer with the Decatur Police Department for a couple of years, according to the post. He returned to the Sheriff’s Office in April.

“Lex is one of the best law enforcement officers to ever wear the DPD and WCSO badges,” the post reads. “Lex leaves behind a beautiful and loving young family.”
