Obtaining a driver’s license is standard practice for those in their late teens.

But what about Texans in their 30s?

That was a question posed by one Reddit user, who asked if they needed a learner’s permit to drive in Texas at 35-years-old.

“I understand that anyone below 24 may need a learner’s permit. However, I am 35. Do I need a learner’s permit or a Texas Class C or B-Restricted Driver’s License,” the post read.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has different driver’s license requirements in regards to ages. Here’s what to know:

Can you get a learner’s permit if older than 25 in Texas?

Yes, anyone over 25 years of age can still obtain a learner’s permit, also known as a restricted license.

A restricted license, with a “B” code, means the holder can drive with a licensed driver 21 years of age or older in the front seat, per the Texas Driver Handbook.

To obtain a restricted license, you will need to follow these steps:

  • Fill out a driver license application and bring it with you to DPS office.
  • Provide documents such as U.S. Citizenship, Texas residency, vehicle registration and proof of insurance.
  • Provide thumbprints and take photo at DPS office.
  • Pay fees.
  • Take and pass vision test.
  • Take and pass knowledge test.

While not a requirement to have a restricted license before obtaining a regular unrestricted license, many new drivers use this method to practice driving, according to NextDoorDriving.

Finally, you will need to take a driving test to obtain an unrestricted license.

Do you need to complete a driver education course to obtain a license in Texas?

Yes, if you’re between 18 to 24 years of age. No, if you’re 25 years of age or older.

Those 25 years old or older are not required to take a driver education course to apply for a driver’s license, according to the Texas Driver Handbook. However, it is recommended if you’re a new driver.

You will need to go through the same steps outlined in the previous section in regards to bringing proper documentation to the DPS office. After passing visual and written exams, a driving test is next.

After passing the driving test, you’re license will be mailed to you in about 45 days, according to DPS.
