A boy under 17 years old on Wednesday shot a relative to death as the relative assaulted the boy’s mother in Johnson County, authorities said.

The 48-year-old male relative was taken from the shooting scene in the 8200 block of Kramer Street in Lillian to a Mansfield hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The death of the shooter’s relative was caused by a gunshot wound of the back, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, which also investigates deaths that occur in Johnson County.

In a telephone call to authorities, the mother reported that her son shot her husband, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives interviewed witnesses and the boy, and the Sheriff’s Office said that it believes the boy was protecting his mother from being further assaulted.

A Sheriff’s Office spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions from a reporter that asked about the precise relationship between the boy and the man he shot, the boy’s age, whether the boy’s mother suffered injuries in the assault and whether the shooting occurred inside of a residence or outdoors.
