Southwest red-eye flights to tropical island from Dallas a dream soon to be reality
Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is the nation’s largest low cost airline. With its free checked bag policy, it makes for traveling long distances all the more appealing. Soon, they will add red-eye flights to their offerings.
“We’ve previously shared plans to start overnight flying as we look to increase revenue while providing additional service for our customers,” Brad Hawkins, Southwest communications director, told the Star Telegram.. “Before these flights can begin, there’s a wide range of work that needs to be completed which is anticipated to take place over the next few years.”
And they’re talking about adding non-stop flights to Honolulu (HNL). The flight to Oahu is approximately eight hours from Dallas Love Field (DAL) — that is a full night of sleep.
Southwest flights from Dallas to Hawaii all currently connect through other cities. The red-eye flights will add a non-stop option for travelers.
This is good news for travelers who can sleep anywhere — to them, overnight flights are a dream. For the insomniacs, red-eye flights can be a nightmare.
Do red-eye flights affect health of travelers?
AeroTime made a list of the pros and cons of flying overnight. Travelers from Dallas/Fort Worth may want to consider these when trying Southwest’s newest offerings.
Pros:
Red-eye flights typically carry cheaper fares compared to a daytime flight.
An overnight flight means you arrive in the morning, giving you a full first day at your destination, maximizing your time.
Fewer travelers take red-eye flights leaving travelers potentially more room to stretch.
Passengers can sleep through the duration of the flight, arriving rested.
Cons:
Passengers may experience fatigue or jet lag on their first day.
Some red-eye flights carry limited meal and beverage options.
Increased risk of flight delays or cancellations, which can disrupt your travel plans and have you traveling later than scheduled.
Southwest currently offers itineraries with an overnight layover in select cities. When the airlines will begin red-eye flights has not yet been determined.
