How early is too early to start putting up those ghost, skeleton and witch decorations you’ve been stashing?

While 20% of Americans have their decorations up in late September, 41% decorate during the first week of October, according to a national poll of homeowners by Lombardo Homes.

North Texas gets in the spirit. Halloween brings Fort Worth area children of all ages swarming neighborhoods to trick-or-treat. Others pay to be frightened at established local haunted house attractions.

On average, $145 is spent on the decorations and more than three hours on decorating. Texas is one of those states that most gets in the Halloween spirit with spooky adornments, the poll found. It was the state with the fourth most Halloween decorations.

“When you think of Halloween, you may think of states with a spooky history, like Massachusetts. In fact, Utah is the state that most gets in the spirit of Halloween,” the report says. “Illinois, New Jersey, Texas and New Mexico round out the top five. Unfortunately, Iowa, Minnesota and Mississippi are least interested in decorating.”

Americans take their Halloween decorations seriously, with 25% making it a competition with neighbors. And 82% of homeowners said they are decorating this year, while two-in-three say they decorate every year. As for where they decorate, 67% say they decorate inside, 61% decorate outside and 54% do both. Most say spooky Halloween decorations are their favorite type, while another portion says they prefer fun ones.

Lawn inflatables are the number one type of Halloween decoration people search for. Also popular are Halloween trees, projectors, front door decorations and animatronics.

The most popular Halloween movies that families may theme their decorations around: Hocus Pocus, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, It, Peanuts, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Ghostbusters, and The Addams Family.
