Rain chances increase this week in North Texas, but will it wash away the stifling heat?

Triple digit temperatures continue in North Texas this week, but fret not, rain is on the way.

While the forthcoming rain won’t improve the drought conditions across the Metroplex, it will be quite the change of pace, said Daniel Huckaby, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office.

Wednesday will see a 20% chance of rain, followed by the same percentage over Friday. Saturday will likely be North Texas’ best chance for storms this week with a 30% chance of rain, Huckaby said.

Sunday’s rain chances lower slightly to 20%, stretching into Monday with isolated storms.

“Anytime we’re talking about rain chances, we haven’t had a lot lately so we’ll take it,” Huckaby said.

Despite the possibility of rain this week, temperatures are expected to be above normal.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the low triple digits, followed by 105 degrees on Thursday. Friday is expected to be the warmest day of the week at 107 degrees, Huckaby said.

The rain chances over the weekend will lower the temperature to around the 100 degree mark.

While North Texans may be wondering why the Metroplex is still recording triple digit days, it’s not uncommon to have 100-degree weather in September, Huckaby said.

“It does happen,” Huckaby said. “Of course as we get later into the month, it gets less and less likely.”

As of Monday, North Texas has recorded 49 days over triple digits this year, which is fifth all-time for number of 100-degree days for the year. The hottest temperature recorded this year is 110 degrees — on Aug. 25 and 26.
