Anime enthusiasts will have a chance to win a VIP badge to the Anime Frontier convention in Fort Worth by participating in a free cosplay contest at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

The contest is part of Anime at the Modern, an event held August 4 through 6.

This is the first year Anime at the Modern will have a cosplay contest, Sonya Wierzowiecki, Senior Manager of Membership and Special Events, said.

Anime Frontier will be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center Dec. 8-10 and will have anime exhibits, exclusive premieres and special events with some of the biggest guests in anime and manga along with leading publishers.

The contest will be held August 4 at 6:30 p.m. No pre-registration is required — participants should come dressed in their cosplay outfit at least 30 minutes before the contest begins.

August 4 lands on a Friday which means free gallery admission at the Modern. Guests can enjoy a docent-led 20 minute tour at 7 p.m. while Fort Worth-based DJ Boyblk plays music from the museum’s Grand Lobby.

Café Modern and Executive Chef Jett Mora will serve a light dining menu in the lobby which will include deep fried potato cakes, beef rice bowl, vegetarian stir fry noodles and Japanese-style shaved ice.

Specialty drinks along with beer and wine will be available at the cash bar, with happy hour selections.

Anime at the Modern guests will also get a chance to purchase tickets for this year’s second annual Modern by Moonlight Otsukimi Festival, which sold out last year.

“We’ve really partnered with Anime Frontier to enhance everything we’re doing and then with the connection to Otsukimi, Chef Jett is offering sort of a taste of what you’ll get at Otsukimi in terms of Japanese bar food,” Wierzowiecki said.

The festivities don’t end August 4 — anime films will be shown throughout the weekend.

Tickets to each of the screenings are $10, $8 for Modern members, and $7 for Reel People members. Tickets can be purchased online.
