Expect traffic on I-35 in Texas Memorial Day weekend. Here’s where you could hit roadwork

North Texans are gearing up for a busy Memorial Day weekend with many set to hit the road.

Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year with 42.3 million people expected to venture out by plane or car, according to the American Automobile Association. Of those traveling, 37.1 million are expected to drive.

Although news from the state capital on the possibility that annual vehicle inspections could be eliminated in Texas may be distracting some drivers, many will brave I-35 to head out to their Memorial Day weekend destinations. . The interstate runs through the heart of Texas, from the border with Oklahoma to Laredo on the border with Mexico.

Here’s what to know about I-35 construction over the holiday weekend, according to the Texas Department of Transportation:

Gainesville

  • Estimated completion date: May 1, 2025

I-35 from Gainesville to Valley View is under construction for the next two years. Drivers should expect delays on both the north and southbound lanes.

Fort Worth

  • Estimated completion date: Sept. 29

A significant part of I-35W from Eagles Parkway in north Fort Worth to Alliance and North Tarrant Parkway is under construction until later this year. Drivers should expect delays and multiple closures of the north and southbound lanes.

Alvarado

  • Estimated completion date: Dec. 31

Just north of Alvarado from County Road 604 to Highway 67 on I-35W, drivers can expect delays and alternating lane closures for road repair.

Lytle

  • Estimated completion date: Sept. 29

A section of I-35 near Lytle will have multiple lanes reduced to a single lane as construction is being done on Frontage Road. Main lanes will not be affected. Only portions between FM 3175 and FM 2790 will see single lane traffic.

Cotulla

  • Estimated completion date: Jan. 29, 2024

Near the small town of Cotulla, a section of I-35 is under construction. Expect highway to be reduced to a single lane.

South Texas

  • Estimated completion date: July 31

A large section of I-35 between Botines and Laredo is under construction until later this summer. Alternating lanes will be closed but only during the daytime.
