A North Texas resident is the only Texan finalist for Google’s 15th annual Doodle for Google contest.

Doodle for Google is a competition where contestants draw the search engine home page following a theme.

This year’s theme was “I am grateful for...” and students from kindergarten through 12th grade were invited to compete.

Grand Prairie resident Haley Ma is one of the 55 state and territory winners for this year’s contest. Doodle for Google selected the winners from thousands of submissions.

Ma’s artwork shows an Asian American family at a kitchen counter preparing Lao lotus flower cookies together. A pet dog is seen jumping up to grab a cookie from one of the girls’ hands.

In her prompt response, Ma said she is grateful for homemade dishes that remind her to cherish her culture and time spent with family.

“One of my favorite dishes are Lao lotus flower cookies, and whenever I’m away from home, I’m sure I’ll remember the hectic but heartwarming process of baking them,” Ma said in her prompt response.

Texans can vote for Ma to become one of the five national finalists starting Thursday. Votes can be cast on the Doodle for Google website and one winner will be selected out of the five finalists.
