Anti-lockdown activist Shelley Luther back at home after brain surgery hospitalization
Dallas salon owner and political activist Shelley Luther is back at home after being hospitalized for a more than three weeks to repair a ruptured brain aneurysm, her husband Tim Georgeff wrote in an April 27 Facebook post.
Doctors said familiar surroundings could help Luther’s recovery after two brain scans showed no signs of residual bleeding, according to Georgeff.
“I’m very happy to finally have my wife home. For everyone who prayed for us, thank you,” he said in the post.
Luther’s next step is to regain her appetite and deal with any fear and anxiety from her hospitalization, Georgeff said.
The couple faces $1.5 million in medical bills, according to a post from Luther’s sister Keri Byrd.
“She had a plan that covered only superficial illness. Nothing else,” Byrd wrote in the post.
Byrd set up a GoFundMe page to raise $250,000 for Luther’s medical bills. It had raised $19,832 as of 3:39 p.m. Tuesday.
A separate crowdfunding campaign set up by friends of Georgeff and Luther to support Luther’s recovery has raised $33,049 as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Luther rose to prominence in 2020 when she was arrested after refusing to close her salon, in violation of Gov. Greg Abbott’s COVID-19 orders designed to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
She also ran an unsuccessful campaign for a Texas Senate seat in 2020 and a Texas House seat in 2022.
Former Texas gubernatorial candidate Don Huffines joined Georgeff’s call for prayer, sharing his post on Twitter.
Luther was an important part of the move to open up Texas, said Warren Norred, an Arlington attorney who represented Luther in 2020.
He called her an inspiration to people around the world, and said he’s prayerfully optimistic she’ll make a recovery.
A brain aneurysm is a ballooning or bulge of a blood vessel in the brain.
They’re common and often not serious; however, they can become life threatening if they rupture, according to the Mayo Clinic.
