14-year-old dies from injuries weeks after Dallas road rage shooting
A W.T. White High School freshman died Saturday morning after battling for weeks to heal from gunshot injuries he suffered during a road rage shooting on a Dallas highway, a family member said Sunday.
Gabriel Zamora, 14, was pronounced dead at 9 a.m. Saturday at a Dallas hospital, where he had been since he was shot on the morning of Sept. 24.
“No one has been arrested in the case,” said his older sister, Natalie Zamora, on Sunday during a phone interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Natalie Zamora said, “We now believe there could have been two people in the truck at the time of the shooting.”
A GoFundMe account had been created for Gabriel’s family to help with the medical expenses after the shooting. The fund will not be used by the family to help with Gabriel’s funeral.
“My brother, Gabriel, was a lovable and caring person, not only to his family but to everyone he encountered.” Natalie wrote on the GoFundMe account. “All my family and I want is justice for my little brother.”
Natalie aid the family had been out bowling and were returning home on the morning of Sept. 24.
Natalie’s husband was driving their vehicle eastbound on CF Hawn Freeway and Gabriel was a passenger in the front seat. Natalie Zamora was in the back seat with her twin babies.
The shooter, who Gabriel’s family said was driving a 2008-2012 white Chevrolet Silverado truck with a chrome rear bumper and tinted blue LED headlights, drove onto the highway.
The truck cut off the family’s vehicle, and Natalie’s husband honked. Seconds later, the white Chevy pulled up next to them and someone fired a gun five times at their vehicle.
Natalie immediately shielded her babies in the back seat as bullets starting flying in. Gabriel was shot in the head, arm, and torso.
Natalie’s husband attempted to follow the truck to get a license plate, but she stopped him.
“He wasn’t aware that Gabriel was hit,” Natalie said Sunday. “I yelled out that Gabriel was bleeding. He stopped chasing the truck, pulled off the highway and drove to a small convenience store, where we called for help.”
Gabriel was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and he had been in a coma since the shooting.
A funeral service for Gabriel is pending final arrangements.
