Small Business Association loans available for North Texas residents affected by flooding
Qualifying residents in seven North Texas counties affected by the Aug. 22-25 flooding might be eligible for low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
The loans are available for business and home owners, including renters, whose property was damaged in Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman and Rockwall counties.
According to a press release, the SBA acted on its own authority and declared a disaster in response to a request from Gov. Greg Abbott.
Residents can talk to SBA customer service representatives about the program and get help filling out the application at Disaster Loan Outreach Centers at the Samuell-Grand Recreation Center at 6200 East Grand Ave. and the Balch Springs Recreation Department at 4372 Shepherd Lane. They are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Applicants may also apply online.
David McCurdy, the emergency management coordinator for Tarrant County, said that as of Sept. 16, 366 people in Tarrant County had reported some level of property damage through the the State of Texas Individual Assessment Tool.
McCurdy said the SBA aid is helpful because many property owners don’t have insurance that covers flooding.
“Flooding insurance is different than just you know, if you have tornadoes, well, yeah, we’ll cut you a check and off you go,” he said. “Flooding is never easy and [cleanup] usually lasts longer.”
