Fort Worth police forced to put dog down after it mauls woman at an apartment complex
Officers in Fort Worth had to put down a dog on Saturday evening after it mauled a woman, sending her to the hospital in critical condition, according to police.
Fort Worth police said the woman was attacked by the dog around 4:25 p.m. Saturday. When officers arrived, they were told a woman on the second floor of the Edgewood Oaks apartments in east Fort Worth had been bitten by the dog. Family members were screaming from an open window of the apartment for help.
When they reached the apartment, officers tried to open the front door but were unable to because of the dog, according to police. An officer tried to use a department-issued baton to push the dog back, but the dog charged the officer.
Police said the officer, out of fear for his safety and the safety of others, shot the dog at least once. The dog fled down the stairs to charge a second officer. That officer also fired at the dog, the department said for the same reasons as the first, hitting it again at least once.
Police said the dog then turned and charged at fire department personnel who had responded to the scene and the second officer fired again, killing the dog, “which ended the immediate threat to everyone present.”
The woman sustained a severe bite wound to her wrist and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Police said detectives from the major case unit are investigating what happened.
