Father’s Day photos: We asked for your favorite photos of you and your dad. You delivered.
In honor of fathers we asked you to share your favorite picture of dad.
Your responses have been revealing — dad sharing fanhood of a favorite football team or a father of 7 marking an important milestone for one of his children.
We thank you. It helps us celebrate our Father’s Day. This day may not have the commercial clout that the mother’s version possesses., but its potency is growing.
Just look at the latest U.S. Census: There are 72.2 million fathers in America.
The holiday was first celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington, after Sonora Smart Dodd went to local churches, the YMCA, businesses and government officials pitching the idea for a Mother’s Day equivalent for male parents. Dodd, who was raised by a widower, was inspired by a West Virginia church honoring fathers in 1908, according to History.com.
Much has changed since in how fatherhood is viewed, or even how fathers see their roles.
More than 2 million dads are stay-at-home fathers, with 24% of them saying staying home is a choice. The number of single-father households in the U.S. have doubled since 1990 – 2.6 million, up from 1.2 million 30 years ago.
Fatherhood has seemingly changed for millennials compared to their Gen X and Boomer counterparts. For example, less than a third say they are the sole breadwinner compared to nearly half saying that they were in 1970. They are more likely to do more household chores and spend more time with their children, according to a blog devoted to fatherhood.
