Family mourns 15-year-old BMX rider hit, killed by vehicle on Texas 183 in Bedford
Kyle “Hollywood” Hammack’s family believes he was a legend, as a son, a football player and a BMX rider.
The mourning continued Tuesday for the 15-year-old, who died over the weekend in Bedford after he was hit by a vehicle on Texas 183.
“One-third of my heart took his last breath today in tragedy,” Christy Read Hammack of Bedford wrote on her Facebook page, referring to her son. “He is loved by so many and will be missed more than words. My heart aches.”
Christy Hammack said her family had 15 years and nine months of joy with him.
“I will forever treasure every breath he took, every BMX trip, all the laughs and goodness he brought to the lives of so many,” she said.
The 15-year-old was fatally injured Saturday night in an auto-pedestrian accident in the eastbound toll lanes of State Highway 183 in Bedford, authorities said Tuesday. He was pronounced dead at 12:20 a.m. Sunday at Texas Health Harris Methodist HEB.
The driver stopped after the accident and has been cooperating with Bedford police, according to a police statement.
Bedford patrol officers responded to the crash just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3000 block of Texas 183 near the Forest Ridge Drive.
When they arrived, police found the teen, who was unconscious. Officers began administering CPR until Bedford Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported the boy to the hospital.
There are no criminal charges pending, Bedford police said Tuesday in a news release.
Police did not provide any further details on the accident.
“We are still completing our reports and verifying if there is any further video evidence that may occur from the area,“ said Bedford Deputy Police Chief Bobby LaPenna in a Tuesday email.
Christian Hammack of Bedford said his brother, a BMX veteran, was not on a bike when he was hit.
“BMX was his life,” Christian Hammack said Tuesday. “He and a friend had been on some bikes, and then left them near the highway.”
Kyle had been a BMX rider since April 2019, almost three years.
“He played football, but he would be on a BMX bike at least 12 months of the year,” his brother said.
Kyle had just finished his final year at Harwood Junior High in Bedford and he was scheduled to be at Trinity High School in the fall.
His mother noted that more than 300 people showed up Sunday night for a vigil held for Kyle.
Kyle’s funeral is at 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodland Heights Baptist Church, 3712 Central Drive in Bedford.
His mother said on Facebook that her son would want everyone to wear jerseys (BMX or football), or wear something red, which was his favorite color.
“He often wore mismatched gloves, rode his bike with mismatched grips, and ALWAYS marched to the beat of his own drummer,” Christy Read Hammack wrote “Let’s honor him ‘Kyle-style!’”
