Denton Guyer High runner died from heart disease, according to medical examiner
Heart disease killed a Denton Guyer High School cross-country runner last month after a workout on a warm August morning, according to a recent ruling by officials at the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Dylan Wayne Dorrell, a 17-year-old senior at Denton Guyer, collapsed and died on Aug. 13 after completing a morning workout with teammates at South Lakes Park in Denton.
His time of death was 8:52 a.m. on Aug. 13.
Dorrell died from sudden cardiac arrest brought on by fibrous left ventricle scars and a bicuspid aortic valve, according to the medical examiner’s website on Monday. His death was ruled natural.
Denton police and firefighters responded to a call of an unconscious person shortly after 8 a.m. on Aug. 13 in the 500 block of Hobson Lane.
Witnesses told authorities that the teen was discovered unresponsive in the park.
Witnesses administered CPR before emergency medical crews arrived. Dorrell was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
A heat advisory had been in effect on Aug. 13 in Denton County and North Texas.
“Dylan Dorrell meant so much to so many people,” Guyer Coach Jonathan Ponsonby wrote on a GoFundMe page for the family. “As a Guyer High School student and athlete, he was adored and admired by his teachers, teammates, and coaches. He had an amazing work ethic, was focused on improving every small detail, and was a huge part of developing the family atmosphere present at Guyer High School and on the Guyer Cross Country Team.”
