Singer and actor Meat Loaf is suing a DFW hotel for negligence after he says he fell off the stage while answering questions during a horror convention.

Michael Lee Aday, better known as Meat Loaf, and his wife, Deborah Lee Gillespie Aday, filed the suit Monday in Tarrant County District Court against Texas Frightmare Weekend, LLC and Hyatt Regency DFW on North International Parkway.

Texas Frightmare Weekend was hosting its 14th annual convention in May at the hotel and invited Meat Loaf — known for his Bat out of Hell album series as well as acting in movies such as “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Fight Club” — to attend.

Meat Loaf, 72, said in the lawsuit that while he was on stage during a question-and-answer session of the convention, he “put his foot down on part of the curtain that had nothing beneath it,” the suit says.

“Defendants’ negligence in setting up the stage created a ‘trap’ — a hidden hazard to people walking about the stage, making it foreseeable that people may fall off,” the lawsuit says.

After falling off the stage, Meat Loaf was taken in an ambulance to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center with serious injures to his neck, collarbone and shoulder, the suit says. He stayed there for 12 days before being transferred to Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, where he stayed another 30 days.

Overall, Meat Loaf spent 42 days in the hospital from the fall. He had to undergo physical therapy and has not been able to return to performing, he said in the suit.

He is requesting a jury trial in the lawsuit.

The Hyatt hotel in DFW, Hyatt Corporation and Texas Frightmare Weekend organizers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
