Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County has a great New Year’s resolution opportunity, a spokeswoman for the charity said. The group, which delivers meals to those in need, is looking for 70 volunteers to help cover around 50 routes.

Volunteers would typically work one hour a day, one day a week between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to deliver fresh-cooked lunches and make sure residents are safe and healthy.

Meals on Wheels serves clients who are house bound and unable to prepare nutritious meals for themselves. Financial need and age do not play a role in determining eligibility.

Lyle said that since many of the clients are elderly, delivery volunteers also check on the well-being of those they are serving. It’s just as important as delivering the food, she said.

Volunteers wanting to deliver meals must be 18, pass a background check, be available for one hour a week during lunch time, have a car and a valid driver’s license. They’ll also need to go to one of two new volunteer trainings held monthly.

Anyone 16 or 17 can volunteer with a signed release from a parent or guardian.

The charity also needs volunteers to take donations, work in the kitchen, help organize the food pantry, or do light home repairs or yard work.

While it is not required, Meals on Wheels typically looks for volunteers who can commit to at least six months of volunteer work. Volunteers can apply online at mealsonwheels.org.
