Man running from police drowns after starting to pull officer underwater, police say
The Texas Rangers are investigating an incident in Lewisville where a 27-year-old man drowned after trying to run from police, according to the Lewisville Police Department.
Just before 8 a.m. Monday, an officer was sent to a trespassing call in the 1800 block of Waters Ridge.
When officers arrived, the man — who police haven’t yet identified publicly — jumped into the canal. Police say he was attempting to swim to the other side of the shore.
However, the man began struggling in the water, and police say that one officer jumped in to try and save him.
“During the rescue attempt, the man started to pull the officer underwater,” the police department said. “The officer was able to make it back to shore, but the man disappeared underwater.”
The officer tried to find the man but wasn’t able to. He was located by the Lewisville Fire Department dive team about 55 minutes later and pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said.
Police Chief Kevin Deaver requested the Texas Rangers investigate the man’s death.
