Pursuit of Arlington suspect ends with Dallas freeway shutdown

All northbound lanes of Interstate 635 at U.S. 80 were shut down Tuesday at the height of afternoon rush hour as police attempted to arrest a suspect in an Arlington case, WFAA-TV reported.

A Balch Springs patrol car was following a red pickup in which the suspect was riding, according to a news release from the U.S. marshals service.

At 4:20 p.m., the pickup pulled to the shoulder of the loop in Mesquite.

As an officer approached the pickup door, the driver fatally shot himself, the marshals’ news release said. No further details were available.

The suspect in the Arlington case, who was a passenger, was arrested at the scene. He was in the Mesquite jail Tuesday night.

Northbound lanes of the loop were closed for several hours for a crime scene investigation.

Arlington police said late Tuesday the incident was related to an investigation into the death of a man identified as Derek Livingston.

On Jan. 5, Livingston was hit with a brick during a fight with two men in the 3800 block of West Pioneer Parkway. He sought medical treatment on his own but later was admitted to Plano Medical Center. On Monday, detectives learned that he had been removed from life support, Arlington police spokeswoman Tiara Richard said.

The names of the suspect and the driver had not been released by late Tuesday.

A second suspect in Livingston’s death was being sought, police said.
