Man claiming to be terrorist stunned with Taser by Arlington police
A shirtless man at a traffic stop in Arlington tried to assault a police officer, and then claimed affiliation with a terrorist group after the officer arrested him, police said.
Wahib Sadek Hamed, 22, remained in Arlington City Jail on Wednesday .
Arlington police are working with the FBI to investigate Hamed’s claim, but they haven’t found evidence showing the claim was valid, said Lt. Chris Cook, a police spokesman.
The incident started about 3 p.m. Monday, when two citizens reported a possible aggravated assault to an Arlington school resource officer.
The officer, who was returning to the police station, stopped Hamed’s vehicle at Green Oaks Boulevard and Waterview Drive.
Hamed exited his vehicle and began walking toward the officer in an “aggressive manner,” Cook said.
“Based upon not seeing anything in the suspect’s hands, the officer transitioned from his firearm to his Taser,” Cook said. “After a physical confrontation between the officer and the suspect, along with the deployment of a Taser, the suspect was eventually taken into custody with the aid of two citizens.”
A witness, Mohammad Ileiwat, said Hamed “got tased one good time,” but wouldn’t give up.
Ileiwat posted a Facebook video of Hamed walking toward the officer in the inside turn lane of the road and the officer screaming, “Get on the ground!”
As Hamed forced the officer farther back, the officer grabbed him and forced him to the ground on his chest. Two citizens then walked up and helped the officer handcuff Hamed, police said.
When Hamed was on the ground, Ileiwat said, he was trying to talk to someone through his watch.
Police found several guns inside Hamed’s car.
Cook said Hamed threatened a woman with a knife before the officer stopped him.
He is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, assault of a public servant and harassment of a public servant for allegedly spitting on an Arlington officer. His total bail amount is set at $60,000.
