Lowe’s parking lot suicide linked to Grand Prairie homicide, police say

A man who killed himself while surrounded by police in an Arlington Lowe’s parking lot Monday night had told a witness that he killed a woman in Grand Prairie, police said Tuesday.

Ivan Arellano, 29, shot himself in the head and was pronounced dead at 7:35 p.m. Monday, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.

Tuesday morning, Grand Prairie police found a woman’s body in a “heavily wooded area” near the 2400 block of Pioneer Boulevard, police spokesman Lyle Gensler said. The woman, who police say is likely in her 20s, had not been identified by late Tuesday afternoon.

Police involvement began Monday with a disturbance call about 5 p.m. from a La Quinta Inn near the Lowe’s off Arbrook Boulevard, Lt. Chris Cook, an Arlington police spokesman, said.

The disturbance, Cook said, was between a married couple and Arellano.

When officers arrived, they found Arellano barricaded in a white van in the Lowe’s parking lot.

The officers “believed the man was armed” so they locked down the store and blocked entrances to the parking lot, Arlington police spokeswoman Zhivionni McDonnell said Monday night.

When officers heard a muffled gunshot, a SWAT unit with an armored vehicle was called in, Cook said. Those officers found Arellano dead in the car about 7:30 p.m.

Grand Prairie police are still investigating the woman’s death, Gensler said.
