Arlington businessman gets 36 months for income tax fraud
An Arlington businessman who pleaded guilty last year to income tax fraud has been sentenced to the maximum 36 months in federal prison and fined $250,000.
Avan Nguyen, who operates Nava Material Goods, a wholesaler of beauty and nail salon products, pleaded guilty in August to failing to report $4.91 million on his corporate income tax return for 2011, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney John Parker of the Northern District of Texas in Fort Worth.
Nguyen agreed to forfeit $1.1 million that the government seized from his business and bank accounts in 2013. He made full restitution of nearly $338,000 to the Internal Revenue Service before he was sentenced by U.S. District Judge John McBryde.
The IRS led the criminal investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Poe prosecuted Nguyen, who was ordered to surrender to the federal prison bureau on March 1, the statement said.
