This retro Arlington building near AT&T Stadium will become new apartments
As downtown Arlington continues to grow, a building with a storied past will become an apartment complex.
Just a mile from AT&T Stadium, the Balfour Flats will be a 99-unit three-story walkup apartment building on 1.61 acres on the site of the Johnny Balfour Electronics store. The apartments will be at 700 East South St.
The complex will offer studio apartments, as well as one and two-bedroom apartments, at market rates. It will include parking, a resident lounge, co-working spaces, a fitness center, a dog park, and on-site storage.
The project, according to developers, is a joint venture between Dallas-based Slate Properties and Fort Worth-based Pershing Capital.
The building that housed the electronics store will be demolished before construction begins, said Dylan Leonoudakis of Slate Properties, but the historic sign and light fixtures will be saved and put in the new development as an homage to its roots.
The Balfour family held an estate sale for some of the store’s stock, Leonoudakis said, and developers will work to preserve the historic aspects of the building while making way for a fast-growing area of downtown Arlington.
“Arlington continues to emerge as one of the most vibrant and walkable downtowns in the Metroplex, with more than 50 restaurants, breweries, public art installations, unique retail, and a year-round calendar of events, including over 50 free concerts annually,” Leonoudakis wrote in a statement.
Construction is expected to begin later this summer, Leonoudakis said.
