The Arlington Fire Department is investigating the cause of a three-alarm fire early Wednesday at an abandoned school building, officials said.

Firefighters responded around midnight to investigate smoke coming from the area of Collins Street and Tharp Street, according to a news release from the Arlington Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, they observed smoke coming from the roof of the former Carter Junior High School, at 701 Tharp St., the release stated.

A third alarm was called at the vacant school building, which is currently in the process of demolition, as the fire intensified on the second and third floors. Firefighters called for additional personnel to ensure adequate resources and firefighter safety, according to the release.

“Firefighters worked aggressively to contain the blaze, and the fire was declared under control at 1:29 a.m., approximately one hour and 25 minutes after initial units arrived on scene,” the release said.

No injuries were reported.
