Family of Arlington man who died in lobby of Dallas jail calls for release of video
The family of an unarmed Arlington man who died Aug. 1 in the lobby of the Dallas County Jail on Friday publicly demanded the release of security video footage showing the confrontation between him and sheriff’s deputies.
Joined by civil rights groups, Joseph Hutcheson’s family held an emotional press conference Friday morning calling on Sheriff Lupe Valdez to release the footage. The family and a small group of protesters also turned out for a rally at the jail Friday evening and were met by sheriff’s deputies in riot gear.
The family and the activists contrasted the Dallas Sheriff’s Department’s response with those of Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson after the recent death of 19-year-old Christian Taylor, a burglary suspect who was shot by an Arlington police officer.
Johnson fired the officer within days. He has held two press conferences and has met with Taylor’s family.
“I want answers and I deserve answers and I want them really quickly,” said Nicole Hutcheson, Joseph’s wife of seven years. “Mr. Taylor got his answers and I’m still sitting there waiting. I want those tapes released and I want to know who is the man that stood on my husband’s neck.” Full report at WFAA.com
