It’s a well-known fact that seniors who are more active have a better chance of living longer, more fulfilled lives.

Now, in Arlington there is a recreation center designed specifically with that in mind. The ACTIV opened recently and has already become extremely popular with the senior population in the city.

“I’ve been able to walk the indoor track, the outdoor paths and have participated in activities that you did not have to register for.,” Arlington resident Betty Hartman Constantine said. “The staff is very friendly and helpful. And it’s a beautiful facility.”

It’s also the largest rec center in Arlington at a little over 73,000 square feet. It is uniquely dedicated to serving adults ages 50 and over.

Patrons will find state-of-the-art fitness equipment, classrooms, social gathering spaces and rental facilities. This summer will have the unveiling of the aquatics component of ACTIV with both lap and wellness pools.

“The ACTIV is an incredible place full of activity and community for those over 50. It is also a beautiful addition to the neighborhood that Arlington residents can be proud of,” Arlington City Council Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Raul Gonzalez said.

ACTIV takes holistic approach to well-being

Unlike traditional recreation centers, ACTIV takes a holistic approach to well-being, offering spaces and programming that support both physical health and social connection.

“From fitness and aquatics to educational classes and social gatherings, ACTIV is designed to enrich every aspect of life for older adults,” said Phillip Rogers said., Arlington Parks and Recreation marketing and enterprise development manager.

Rogers said the concept for an active adult center in Arlington was developed by city staff at the direction of the City Council. He noted one of the leading advocates for the project was former council member Charlie Parker, who Rogers said envisioned a facility that could rival The Summit in Grand Prairie.

“Community support played a key role in moving the project forward — Elva Roy and the Ambassadors for Aging Well personally contributed their own funds to help build momentum and garner support for the bond funding,” Rogers said. “Their efforts, along with widespread community interest, led to Arlington voters approving the center in 2017.”

Rogers said the COVID-19 pandemic underscored just how essential social connection is to living a healthy, fulfilling, and long life. He pointed out that ACTIV provides a dedicated space where older adults can build meaningful relationships and stay engaged — both mentally and physically.

“It’s not just a building, it’s a community hub that promotes active aging and a higher quality of life for Arlington’s 50-plus population,” he said.

ACTIV reviews from residents

“My husband and I have joined ACTIV and are really enjoying it,” said Arlington resident Becky Hearne. “I’m attending the 6:15 a.m. strength class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I did the highest level membership to have the instructor lead classes. My husband did the mid-level membership. He uses the machines.

“The indoor walking track is nice. We’ve also walked on the outside trail. The facility is very nice.”

Fellow Arlington resident Geri Piccola McNiece said, “We are loving it. We have been going for chair yoga three times per week, plus we’ll be hula hooping - I’m a volunteer teaching it - once a week up there soon.”

While ACTIV is generally designed for adults age 50 and over, Rogers said there is an exception. Spouses under the age of 50 are welcome to join if their partner is 50 or older and holds a membership.

You don’t have to live in the city to take advantage of all it has to offer. Membership options are available for Arlington residents and nonresidents, making it accessible to a wide community.

In addition, they accept various insurance plans, providing even more flexibility for individuals to become part of the ACTIV community.

“I am a Mansfield resident and visited with Arlington family members. I was impressed,” Sandy Cupples Montgomery said. “Going upstairs, there was just about any exercise machine you might want. Circling the downstairs gym is the walking/jogging track. There are a few benches scattered around it and a locking personal item, like for keys, and phone storage complete with charging for while you are walking.

“My Arlington family signed up right then and are covered by their insurance which will pay directly to the facility. Pick up a list of activities while you are there. A Mother’s Day Tea is scheduled in May.

“I was very impressed with everything. I hope it will be maintained and be a clean, safe destination for seniors for many years.”

Rogers said he hopes ACTIV inspires other cities to do the same for their senior citizens.

“ACTIV represents more than just a recreation facility — it’s a place that fosters community, connection, and well-being for older adults,” he said. “Cities and communities everywhere can benefit from creating spaces like this, where individuals can stay active, engaged, and supported as they age.”

He added that with the popularity comes a request for patience.

“As we settle into this exciting new chapter, I kindly ask for grace and patience as we learn and adapt to the needs and interests of our patrons,” he said. “Many of our classes are already full, and we’re working diligently to expand offerings as resources allow.

“This is very much a ‘honeymoon period,’ and it provides a valuable opportunity to understand what programs will best serve our community long-term. Our goal is to create a space that truly reflects the interests and well-being of our members, and that takes time, feedback, and collaboration.”
