Teen sentenced to 40 years for murder in shooting of Arlington Bowie High School classmate

A 17-year-old has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the April 2024 shooting death of a classmate at Arlington Bowie High School, Tarrant County District Attorney Phil Sorrells said.

The shooter, Julian Howard, pleaded guilty on Friday to murder in the death of 18-year-old Etavion Barnes, Sorrells said.

Howard shot Barnes five times near a portable classroom building on campus just before the end of the school day, Arlington police said at the time.

Howard was later arrested near the edge of campus after leaving the scene on foot, police said.

The school was then placed on lockdown and students were evacuated by bus to the Arlington ISD Athletics Center to be reunited with their families, the Star-Telegram reported at the time.

Friends of Barnes described him as a “sweet young man” who had a humble spirit.
