Multiple people hospitalized in I-30 crash of inmate transport van and pickup in Arlington
Multiple people were taken to local hospitals Tuesday morning after a crash involving a van and a pickup truck on Interstate 30 in Arlington, police said.
The van belongs to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and was transporting inmates when it became involved in the accident on eastbound I-30 near Six Flags Drive, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Investigators believe the pickup switched lanes in front of the van and then came to an abrupt stop, police said. It appears the driver of the van tried to brake, but ended up rear-ending the pickup.
All the inmates who were on board were taken to hospitals to be evaluated with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. The pickup driver also was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, while the van driver was treated and released at the accident scene, police said.
Arlington Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Adam Evans said all the injuries were minor. In total 12 people — including 11 inmates and the pickup driver — were taken to hospitals just as a precaution, authorities said.
Arlington police officers responded to the crash in the eastbound lanes of I-30 near Texas 360 about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, March 18.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Heavy traffic following the accident was causing delays in the area Tuesday morning, according to police.
All lanes of I-30 are now open, police said around 10:45 a.m.
