A suspect shot by an armored truck guard during a robbery attempt has been identified as James Clayton Garrett, police said Wednesday.

Garrett, 56, who was shot in the abdomen, remained in serious condition Wednesday at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. Records indicate that Garrett lives in Azle.

He is accused of attempting to take money from an ATM or rob an armored truck on Tuesday morning at the Bank of America in the 4200 block of W. Green Oaks Boulevard.

No other injuries were reported.

Patrol officers responded to the shooting call about 10:20 a.m. Tuesday on West Green Oaks Boulevard.

Two guards form Dunbar Armored told police that a man exited a truck with no license plates on it and walked up to one of the guards who was servicing an ATM in the bank’s drive-thru lanes.

The man sprayed one of the guards with a substance, police said.

At some point, one of the guards opened fire on Garrett, police said.

The window of one nearby business was hit by gunfire, but no injuries were reported.

Garrett was in the Fort Worth hospital on Wednesday in police custody, but no charges have been filed against him.

FBI agents are assisting in the investigation.
