A fatal Mansfield car crash took the life of a 21-year-old early after a vehicle ran a red light Friday morning.

The accident occurred around 1:30 a.m., Officer Zhiovanni Cook said.

A female driver was traveling southbound near Matlock Road and Debbie Lane. A car traveling westbound, driven by Joel Lagunas Alcazar, ran a red light and struck the vehicle with the female driver and a male passenger.

The passenger, Michael Nguyen, 21, of Arlington, was taken to a hospital where he later died.

The female driver was evaluated at the scene for injuries and was released.

Lagunas Alcazar was charged with intoxicated assault with serious bodily injury, but Cook said once the police department receives the toxicology report, the charges are expected to be upgraded to intoxicated manslaughter.
