Young man drowns near UTA after being swept off bridge by floodwaters

A 23-year-old man drowned after being swept off a bridge by floodwaters near the University of Texas at Arlington late Friday night, spokesmen for the fire department and school said.

He was identified as Alan Amaya of El Paso, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s website on Sunday.

According to records, he was a student at UTA.

The call came out shortly before midnight. Arlington Fire and Rescue and campus police responded to the incident in the 1000 block of Greek Row Drive, Joiner said.

“It took a while to find him,” Joiner said, explaining that the victim was reported by witnesses to be pulled into the heavily flooded creek that took hours to recede.

Amaya’s body was recovered shortly before 2 a.m., Joiner said.

Campus police issued a shelter in place warning shortly after 1 a.m.

UTA spokesman Joe Carpenter said campus police were called shortly after 11 p.m.
