Burglary suspect wounded after he attempted to take officer's weapon, Grand Prairie police say

A burglary suspect who attempted to take an officer's weapon during a fight with him was shot twice Sunday morning, police said.
The suspect was hit in the arm and leg, but he did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
The officer who suffered injuries during the struggle with the suspect was taken to a local hospital and later released. He also did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
Police identified the suspect as Gary Rogers, 26, who faces a charge of assault on a peace officer. Additional charges are expected against Rogers, police spokeswoman Chelsea Kretz said in a Sunday news release.
Police responded to a burglary call about 4 a.m. at the Sunridge Apartments in the 100 block of W. Pioneer Parkway. Someone reported a suspect was breaking into a vehicle.
An officer responding to the call located a suspect in the 200 block of Victoria Drive breaking into a vehicle, police said.
The suspect later identified as Rogers refused to follow the officer's command and a fight ensued.
The officer used a non-lethal weapon, a conducted energy weapon, but it was unsuccessful, police said.
"The suspect then attempted to take the officer's duty weapon," Kretz said in the news release. "The officer, being in fear for his life, fired his service weapon striking the suspect in his arm and leg."
The suspect received first aid and was taken to Medical City of Arlington.
An officer-involved shooting team from the Dallas County District Attorney's Office responded and they are conducting an investigation.
The officer who was not identified was placed on administrative leave .
