The identity of the man who apparently jumped to his death during rush hour in Arlington Wednesday had not been determined by Thursday morning, police said.

Four lanes of eastbound Interstate 20 in Arlington were shut down at the Bowman Springs Road bridge Wednesday after the man apparently jumped from the overpass, according to police.

Police first got a call at 4:18 p.m. saying a person was on the bridge, "but before we got there he ended up on the road," Arlington police Lt. Chris Cook said Thursday. "We assume he jumped."

The man was hit by at least one vehicle on the road, Cook said.

"We are operating on the theory that he was suicidal and jumped to his death," he said, adding that no abandoned car was found nearby, leading investigators to believe the man walked to the bridge.

Traffic was snarled for more than an hour as police investigated.

Arlington police get calls about people on bridges a couple of times a year, Cook said.

"Sometimes when we get there, we're able to talk to them" and eventually have them evaluated at a hospital he said.

An investigation into the incident continues.
