Arlington High football star arrested, loses scholarship

An Arlington High School football star remained in custody Thursday, arrested earlier in the week and accused of taking an unloaded gun and drugs to the school, police said.

Raymond Sheard, 19, of Arlington, also will no longer be attending Boise State University this summer, where he had a scholarship to play football this fall, according to idahostatesman.com.

Sheard was in the Arlington Jail Thursday in lieu of $6,750 bail. He faces charges of a prohibited weapon, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance (prescription drugs).

The Arlington High School senior was arrested Tuesday at the school, 818 W. Park Row Drive.

Sheard had been called to the office and his behavior led officials to search his backpack, Arlington school district spokeswoman Leslie Johnston said on Thursday in an email.. In the backpack, school officials found the gun, with no magazine or ammunition, and the drugs.

School officials called an Arlington school district resource officer and Sheard was arrested.

“No ammunition was found with the gun, and no altercation or injury was reported on school property,” said Arlington High principal Shahveer Dhalla in a letter parents received on Tuesday. “However, we do take all threats and violations seriously and are taking appropriate disciplinary action against the student who brought the gun.”

Boise State officials signed Sheard in February, and he was set to join the team this summer, according to Idahostatesman.com, but university officials said on Wednesday that the Arlington High student would not be attending the school.

The 6-foot-1, 200 pound running back had gained over 1,500 yards last season, and he was the only running back signed by the university, according to Idahostatesman.com.

He chose the Broncos over offers from Colorado State, Tulsa, Texas State and Oregon State.
