The El Paso man involved Friday in a high-speed chase with police in a stolen 18-wheeler that ended in a fiery crash faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest.

Jose Luis Cano Olivas, 35, was transferred to the Mansfield jail after receiving treatment for minor injuries at John Peter Smith Hospital.

Olivas is accused of driving the big rig at speeds reaching 100 mph and leading police on a chase on Interstate 30, leaving the freeway littered with crashed vehicles from Fort Worth to Arlington. He reportedly caused at least five other traffic accidents.

After his truck crashed near the Cooper Street exit in Arlington, the highway was shut down as dozens of SWAT officers from Arlington and Fort Worth swarmed the vehicle, resulting in a two-hour standoff. Olivas was eventually removed from the truck without incident.

Luckily, no serious injuries were reported.

The truck had been stolen from Pesado Transport in Socorro near El Paso and had been carrying a load of copper sheets.
