Dallas County reports COVID spike among youth hockey teams, including death of coach

Dallas County reported 259 coronavirus cases and one death on Friday.

The latest death is a Sunnyvale woman, 78, who did not have underlying health conditions, according to officials. She had been critically ill at an area hospital.

The county reports a decline in coronavirus cases in children 5 to 17 in data collected through Sept. 5 with a provisional total of 104 confirmed and probable cases.

Officials report that 31 cases of COVID-19 over the past two weeks have been associated with multiple youth hockey teams in North Texas, including five coaches. One such coach, a 29-year-old man in a neighboring county, reportedly had the coronavirus at the time of his death, officials said.

Dallas County has confirmed 74,887 COVID-19 cases, including 965 deaths. The county does not report recoveries.

Of Friday’s cases, 109 were unreported from earlier, including 45 from September, 41 from August, and 23 from July.

Texas’ Department of State Health Services data reporting system is still adding cases that went unreported since confirming a glitch in the system in early August.
