Dallas County COVID case count soars past 22,000 with Thursday’s record high; 7 deaths

Dallas County set a new single-day record with 708 coronavirus cases and seven more deaths on Thursday.

The latest pandemic-related deaths include five residents of Dallas and two in Irving, including a man in his 40s and a woman in her 60s. Both had underlying high risk health conditions and had been hospitalized.

The Dallas deaths include two men in their 50s, women in their 60s and 70s, and a man in his 90s. One of the two Dallas men did not have underlying health conditions.

The county has confirmed 22,590 COVID-19 cases, including 387 deaths.

The county has reported at least 300 cases every day since June 10. It took the county 92 days after reporting its first COVID-19 case to report 300 in a day. It took 22 days for that number to jump to 700. The previous high was 601 reported Tuesday. More than 500 cases have been reported each of the past six days.

“The situation we have right now is significant and accelerating community spread,” Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a release and on social media. “We cannot afford another statewide letdown in our strong personal responsibility COVID-19 protection choices.”

Jenkins urged residents to limit their Fourth of July celebrations to nuclear family and to “avoid crowds and extended family gatherings.”

“I realize this is disappointing for all of us but it’s up to all of us to #FlattenTheCurve and save lives,” he said.
