Woman spits on Fort Worth store counter after being told she needs a mask to buy beer

A woman yelled at a 7-Eleven cashier and spit on the counter on Monday after the worker refused to ring up her items because she was not wearing a mask, a video of the exchange shows.

In the video, which was posted on Facebook, a woman stands in front of the gas station counter, where a cashier talks with her behind a plastic partition. A case of Miller Lite beer and two boxes of Milk Duds sit on the counter.

The cashier appears to be telling the woman she cannot buy the beer and candy because she is not wearing a mask. In Tarrant County, customers are required to wear masks inside of businesses to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Businesses are in violation of the order if they do not require customers to do so.

The gas station, which is located at 8421 Boat Club Road in Fort Worth, also has a policy recommending patrons wear a face covering, an employee at the 7-Eleven confirmed.

The video, which is split into two parts, shows the woman arguing with the cashier.

“I don’t have a mask!” the woman yells at the cashier.

“I don’t know what to tell you,” the cashier says to her.

“This is (expletive) ridiculous,” she says. “You’re not gonna sell me this? It’s gonna take you — I’m spreading more germs by standing here, for God’s sakes!”

The clerk gestures and says, “You can buy a mask.”

“I’m not paying for a (expletive) mask!” the woman says. “We have a right in America not to wear a (expletive) mask. Do you not watch the news? We don’t have to do this.”

The clerk points at something and says there is a sign on the door that asks customers to wear masks. The first part of the video ends.

In the second video, which is 10 seconds long, the woman leans forward and spits on the gas station counter.

“There you go,” she says.

“You spit on the (expletive) counter, don’t do that,” the clerk says, and tells another customer he can ring them up at another counter.

The video, which was posted on Facebook by a person who did not want to be named but who gave the Star-Telegram permission to use it, had 1,000 comments and 2,000 shares as of Wednesday. An employee at the 7-Eleven referred the Star-Telegram’s questions to their corporate office, which did not respond to requests for comment.

Videos in which people refuse to wear a mask and yell at those who tell them to do so have become common on social media over the past few weeks. One woman chucked the groceries from her cart onto a supermarket floor in Dallas after being told to put on a mask. Another woman yelled at customers and employees inside a California Trader Joe’s when they confronted her for not wearing a mask.

Some on social media have dubbed those in the videos as “Karens,” which has become a term to specifically describe a white woman who reacts aggressively and unnecessarily to a situation.
