Here’s what Beyonce is doing to help her hometown during coronavirus
All across the globe, celebrities are doing their part to help as much as they can during the coronavirus pandemic. From Ariana Grande, who shared a roundup of the organizations she’s been supporting during these trying times, to Future’s FreeWishes Foundation providing more than 100,000 masks to healthcare workers who are risking their lives by manning the front lines, according to Billboard.
Now Beyoncé, her mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, and Beyoncé’s charity BeyGOOD are stepping up to help her hometown of Houston in a big way.
The Grammy Award-winning artist is starting a new campaign called #IDIDMYPART that supports mobile COVID-19 testing in the Houston area. The relief campaign will donate 1,000 COVID-19 test kits along with face masks, gloves, vitamins, and household supplies.
“The virus is wreaking havoc on the Black community so we need a movement to prioritize our health,” said Knowles Lawson, a philanthropist, entrepreneur and fashion designer who created the campaign. “We’re all in this together. But we have to look at what is happening in our Black and Brown communities and how they are being decimated by COVID-19.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which was cited by Knowles Lawson, as of April 20, 33.7% of coronavirus patients were African American.
“It is critical that we stay vigilant with social distancing, wearing a mask, and most of all getting tested,” she said.
Through BeyGOOD, Beyonce has donated $6 million for COVID-19 relief, according to Pitchfork.
The #IDIDMYPART Mobile Testing Relief Campaign launches on May 8 and 9, which is Mother’s Day weekend.
